Fall Meeting Notice

“There was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler…”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “A Scandal in Bohemia”

And what better place to consider the mystery behind this woman and this story than at the fall afternoon meeting of The Amateur Mendicant Society of Detroit, to which you are most cordially invited.

Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 1 p.m.
Dakota Inn Rathskeller, 17324 John R Steet, Detroit
just north of McNichols (Six Mile) Road
Phone: (313) 867-9722

Our brief Canonical discussion will concern “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches,” in which Holmes’ client, Violet Hunter, is asked to do some very odd things by her employer Jephro Rucastle. There will also be the usual toasts, a prize drawing and raffle for an exciting piece of Sherlockian memorabilia.

Then, since we are meeting at Detroit’s only authentic German bar and restaurant, Mendicant member Dr. David Mohan will present his investigation into just who was the real Irene Adler of “A Scandal in Bohemia” – and he’ll also offer a brief analysis of how Holmes’ viewed women and why.

The Dakota Inn has been offering foamy suds, German food and gemutlichkeit (a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy friends) since 1933. Secure parking is provided. For more, visit: http://www.dakota-inn.com/ on the Web.

We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 11th. Libations begin at 1 p.m. with a hearty lunch at 1:30 p.m.

To attend this festive event, please mail your check for $25 per person by Monday, Oct. 6 to:

Edward F. Stein, A.M.S.
25015 Oakbrooke
Southfield, MI 48033

The hearty lunch includes bratwurst, knackwurst, schnitzel, German potato salad, vegetables and, ya, strudel plus rolls and coffee and or tea. As always, there will be a cash bar.

Respectfully Submitted,
Rob Musial, Tantalus

The meeting was a joy. Forgive this query, but may I presume that I know enjoy fellowship with this august society?
