Summer Meeting

“These are much deeper waters than I had thought.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Reigate Squire(s)” or “The Reigate Puzzle”

Deep waters they are indeed since this mystery is actually known by one of three titles. But have no fear. All will be made clear, at the annual Summer Meeting of The Amateur Mendicant Society of Detroit – to which you are most cordially invited.

Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 7 p.m.
British Commonwealth Club, 30088 Dequindre Rd., Warren
(between 12 & 13 Mile Roads)
Club phone: (586) 751-9560

Our brief Canonical discussion will concern “The Reigate Squires,” in which Holmes, while recuperating in the Surrey countryside, plumbs the depth of those deep waters and manages to solve a murder case as part of his therapy. There will also be the usual toasts, a prize drawing and raffle for the third of four commemorative Canonical marble tiles imprinted with a classic illustration by Sidney Paget.

In keeping with the summer blockbuster season, Regina Stinson, a Baker Street Irregular and AMS member as well as the Gasogene of the Ribston-Pippins scion, will present “The Moving Sherlock: A Study in Pictures,” illuminating how the cinematic portrayal of Holmes has changed over the years, from silent films to Basil Rathbone and on through Jeremy Brett.

We look forward to seeing you on August 2nd. Libations begin at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.

To attend this festive event, please mail your check for $25 per person by Monday, July 28 to:

Edward F. Stein, A.M.S.
25015 Oakbrooke
Southfield, MI 48033

The buffet dinner will be roasted chicken and English steak pie, potatoes, vegetables and a tossed salad. Rolls, dessert, coffee/tea included. As always, there will be a cash bar.

Respectfully Submitted,
