August 5 Meeting Notice

30 July 2006

Dear Amateur Mendicants & Friends,

I am sure you are enjoying a beautiful summer outdoors in various activities, especially watching those Tigers.

This notice will require a brief respite from the elements, as the next Amateur Mendicant Society meeting will return to our friendly ‘home’ at the Commonwealth Club for a dinner meeting on Saturday, August 5. The Club is located on Dequindre Road north of 12 Mile Road. We are to gather there at 6:30, dinner will be served at 7 PM. The menu will consist of salad, English steak pie, chicken cordon bleu, au gratin and oven baked potatoes, mixed vegetables, rolls, assorted desserts, coffee and tea at a cost of $24 per person.

The story for discussion and quiz for the evening is The Adventure of the Engineers Thumb.

As always, please confirm your attendance for the August meeting by sending your check to arrive no later than Wednesday, August 2, to:

Edward F. Stein, A.M.S.

Our speaker for the evening is Steven Doyle, B.S.I. (rumored cousin of A.C.D.) and a member of the Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis and Wessex Press. He played a major role in the 2003 symposium “From Gillette to Brett. Steven is an author, speaker and friend whose presentations reflect his superlative Sherlockian knowledge.

Members are asked to bring an item to this meeting for auction at the fall meeting to be held at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial on Saturday, October 21. Your item for auction will be listed in the catalogue and the website prior to the Fall meeting and day of auction.

If you have been derelict in paying the $12 membership fee for 2006, please discuss this important matter with Walter Young who keeps track of this matter.

Sherlockian regards,
Ray Mandziuk, Tantalus

From the Vault

Not sure how I missed this, but the Amateur Mendicant Society of Detroit was featued prominently in a 2005 Oakland Press article written by member Rob Musial. The article does a great job of introducing readers to the Amateur Mendicants, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and "The Game". Read the article here
